Parliament Budget Session Day 7: PM Modi Says Time Spent Correcting Congress’ Mistakes

Opposition Walks Out as PM Replies to Motion of Thanks

Day 7 of the Parliament Budget Session witnessed sharp political exchanges, repeated disruptions, and walkouts, as Narendra Modi delivered his reply to the Motion of Thanks on the President’s Address in the Rajya Sabha.

During his address, PM Modi said that a significant amount of parliamentary time was being spent “fixing the mistakes committed by the Congress over decades.” Opposition members staged a walkout from the Rajya Sabha during his speech.

Meanwhile, proceedings in the Lok Sabha were adjourned for the fourth consecutive day amid continuous sloganeering.

Lok Sabha Adjourned Amid Uproar

The Lok Sabha was first adjourned till noon and later till 2 p.m. on Thursday (February 5, 2026), shortly after the resolution on the President’s address was passed. Speaker Om Birla adjourned the House as Opposition protests continued unabated.

Budget Session Schedule

The Budget Session will span 30 sittings over 65 days, concluding on April 2. Both Houses will adjourn for a recess on February 13 and reconvene on March 9, allowing Standing Committees to examine the Demands for Grants of various ministries and departments.

‘Garibi Hatao Was Just a Slogan’: PM Modi

Speaking in the Rajya Sabha, PM Modi launched a scathing attack on the Congress, stating that the slogan “Garibi Hatao” was never backed by concrete action.

“They only gave slogans. We worked to empower the poor,” Modi said, adding that 25 crore people have been lifted out of poverty through welfare schemes implemented over the last decade.

He said that the poor had not only benefited from government schemes but had also actively used them to improve their lives.

PM Accuses Opposition of Insulting Constitutional Institutions

PM Modi accused Opposition parties of repeatedly insulting women, Adivasis, and the highest constitutional offices through their conduct in Parliament.

He questioned remarks made by former Congress leaders who described India’s population as a “problem,” saying, “If there are 80 crore people, then there are 80 crore solutions.”

Charges of Disrespect to Northeast, Sikhs and National Icons

The Prime Minister further alleged that the Congress had disrespected the Northeast, claiming the party was unhappy with the decision to confer the Bharat Ratna on Bhupen Hazarika, calling it an insult to Assam.

He also accused the Opposition of harbouring resentment towards the Sikh community and national icons.

‘They Want to Dig Modi’s Grave’: PM

Referring to sustained criticism against him, Modi said he had been insulted daily in Parliament for over 25 years, but such attacks stemmed from his government’s decisive actions.

He listed major policy decisions including:

  • Abrogation of Article 370
  • Strong action against terrorism
  • Firm response to Naxalism
  • Security operations targeting Pakistan-backed terror networks

“They believe the Prime Minister’s post is their family legacy. That is why they cannot understand how Modi came here and how Modi has stayed,” he said.

Political Tensions Continue in Parliament

With repeated disruptions, walkouts, and adjournments, the Budget Session continues amid intense confrontation between the government and the Opposition, raising concerns over legislative productivity in the days ahead.
