PM Modi to Launch Two New Delhi Metro Corridors, Expanding Capital’s Circular Transit Network

Delhi’s rapidly expanding metro network is set to receive another major boost as Prime Minister Narendra Modi prepares to inaugurate two new corridors and launch additional expansion projects across the national capital. The infrastructure push, valued at nearly ₹33,500 crore, aims to strengthen public transport connectivity while easing congestion in one of India’s busiest urban regions.

The upcoming inauguration marks a significant milestone for the city’s mass transit system, particularly with the completion of new sections on two key lines of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation network. These additions are expected to shorten travel times for commuters in northern and eastern parts of the city while improving connectivity with neighbouring districts in the National Capital Region.

One of the major sections to be opened is the Majlis Park–Maujpur Babarpur stretch on the Pink Line. Spanning roughly 12 kilometres and including several elevated stations, the new segment will extend the Pink Line to over 70 kilometres. Transport planners say this expansion effectively transforms the route into India’s first operational “ring metro”, allowing passengers to travel around much of the capital without needing to pass through central interchange stations.

The corridor runs through densely populated areas including Burari, Jharoda Majra, Jagatpur-Wazirabad, Sonia Vihar and Yamuna Vihar, which until now have had limited direct metro connectivity. The project also includes a newly built bridge across the Yamuna River and a unique double-decker viaduct that carries both a metro line and a road flyover—an engineering solution designed to address space constraints in crowded neighbourhoods.

The second section being inaugurated is the Deepali Chowk–Majlis Park stretch of the Magenta Line. Covering nearly 10 kilometres, the route strengthens transport links in north-western Delhi and connects areas such as Madhuban Chowk, Haiderpur Badli Mor and Bhalaswa. According to Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, parts of this corridor reach heights exceeding 28 metres, making it one of the highest elevated segments in the metro network.

City officials say these two projects are expected to improve mobility for thousands of daily commuters who rely on the metro to travel between residential suburbs and major employment zones.

Alongside the inaugurations, the Prime Minister will also lay the foundation stone for three additional routes under Phase V-A of the Delhi Metro expansion programme. These corridors include a Central Vista route connecting R.K. Ashram Marg to Indraprastha, and two extensions of the Golden Line—one linking Aerocity to Indira Gandhi International Airport Terminal 1 and another connecting Tughlakabad to Kalindi Kunj. Together, these proposed routes will add more than 16 kilometres to the network.

Urban planners believe the new corridors will play a crucial role in integrating airport connectivity and improving transport access between Delhi and neighbouring cities such as Noida and Faridabad.

In addition to metro expansion, the Prime Minister will also launch redevelopment projects under the General Pool Residential Accommodation (GPRA) plan, aimed at modernising government housing colonies in areas like Sarojini Nagar and Netaji Nagar. The initiative is expected to create thousands of modern residential units and large office spaces for government departments.

With these combined infrastructure efforts, policymakers hope to strengthen Delhi’s urban transport system while reducing traffic congestion and air pollution—two of the capital’s most persistent challenges.
