No Fuel Shortage in India, Government Rules Out Curbs on Petrol and Diesel Sales

The central government on Thursday moved to calm public concerns over fuel availability, firmly stating that there is no shortage of petrol, diesel, or LPG anywhere in the country and that no restrictions on fuel sales are being planned. The assurance comes after rumours and global developments sparked panic buying in some areas, leading to long queues at fuel stations in parts of the country.

In a detailed clarification, the petroleum ministry said India’s energy supply remains stable and well-managed, describing the country as an “oasis of energy security” in a volatile global market. Officials stressed that all retail fuel outlets across the country are functioning normally and there has been no directive to ration fuel or limit sales. According to the government, more than one lakh petrol pumps are operating without interruption, ensuring steady supply to consumers.

The ministry highlighted that India currently has adequate reserves to meet domestic demand, with around two months of crude oil supply and one month of LPG stock already secured. Authorities said refiners have also arranged additional imports to further strengthen the supply chain and prevent any disruptions in the coming weeks. The clarification was aimed at countering speculation that India might impose fuel restrictions following global efforts by some countries to reduce consumption amid geopolitical tensions and supply concerns.

Officials pointed out that India imports a large portion of its energy needs — nearly 90% of crude oil, about 60% of LPG, and more than half of its natural gas — but emphasized that alternative supply routes and diversified sourcing have reduced vulnerability to global disruptions. Crude oil is now being sourced from over 40 countries, including increased shipments from the western hemisphere to offset any risks in West Asian supply routes.

To ensure smooth distribution at the ground level, oil companies have extended credit support to petrol pumps, allowing them to maintain sufficient stock without financial strain. The government also noted that domestic LPG production has been significantly ramped up, reaching around 50,000 tonnes per day, while large cargo shipments are already on the way to meet future demand. More than 50 lakh LPG cylinders are being distributed daily across the country.

The ministry dismissed reports of shortages as misinformation and said that isolated incidents of panic buying were triggered by rumours rather than actual supply issues. Officials urged citizens to rely on verified information and avoid unnecessary stockpiling, assuring that the country’s fuel supply system is robust enough to handle global uncertainties.

The government also reiterated that its long-term strategy includes expanding cleaner and more affordable fuel options such as piped natural gas (PNG), a move aimed at reducing dependence on LPG and improving energy affordability for households.
