By The Centre has expanded the authorised strength of the Haryana Indian Police Service (IPS) cadre) from 144 to 153 posts, adding nine positions to the state’s senior police leadership structure. The revised cadre includes changes across senior duty posts, central and state deputation reserves, training and other reserve categories, along with a fresh allocation between direct recruitment and promotion.
The Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) under the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions issued the notification on August 6, 2026, after consultation with the Haryana government. The revised provisions, notified as the Indian Police Service (Fixation of Cadre Strength) Third Amendment Regulations, 2026, came into force from the date of their publication in the Official Gazette.
84 senior duty posts under state government
Under the revised structure, Haryana will have 84 senior duty posts under the state government. The cadre also provides for 33 posts under the Central Deputation Reserve and 21 under the State Deputation Reserve.
Two posts have been earmarked under the Training Reserve, while 13 posts fall under the Leave Reserve and Junior Posts Reserve categories.
The restructuring gives the state a broader framework for deploying senior police officers across the headquarters, ranges, districts, specialised units and major urban centres.
107 direct recruitment and 46 promotion posts
The revised cadre provides for 107 posts to be filled through direct recruitment and 46 through promotion. The promotion quota has been determined in accordance with Rule 9 of the Indian Police Service Recruitment Rules, 1954.
This means eligible officers from the Haryana Police Service will continue to have a defined route for promotion to the IPS, while direct recruitment positions will be filled through the All India selection process.
Senior posts expanded across key police wings
The revised list includes one post each for the Director General of Police, Haryana, and the Director General of Prisons. At the Additional Director General of Police level, posts have been provided for Vigilance, Law and Order, Administration, CID and the State Crime Branch.
The cadre also includes the post of Commandant General, Home Guards and Director, Civil Defence.
At the Inspector General level, positions have been earmarked for the Haryana Police Academy and several police ranges, including South Range Rewari, Karnal, Hisar, Rohtak and Ambala. IG-level posts have also been provided for Railway and Commando, Modernisation, Telecommunications, Security, Law and Order and the State Vigilance Bureau.
Five cities get Police Commissioner posts
The revised cadre provides Police Commissioner posts for Gurugram, Faridabad, Panchkula, Sonipat and Jhajjar.
Gurugram and Faridabad will also have one Joint Commissioner of Police post each. Panchkula has been assigned a Police Commissioner post along with a separate Deputy Commissioner of Police position.
The expansion reflects the growing policing requirements of Haryana’s major urban centres, particularly in areas facing rapid population growth and increasing administrative and law-and-order responsibilities.
Specialised policing gets additional leadership
Several specialised units have also been included at the DIG level. These cover Administration, Home Guards, State Vigilance Bureau, Security, State Crime Branch, CID, IRB, PTS Sunaria, Haryana Armed Police, State Crime Records Bureau, crimes against women, the Haryana State Narcotics Control Bureau, Recruitment Training Centre Bhondsi, Special Task Force and Traffic.
The revised structure gives greater senior-level representation to areas such as women’s safety, narcotics control, organised crime, special operations and traffic management.
District and metropolitan policing strengthened
The cadre includes SP posts for several districts, including Bhiwani, Fatehabad, Hisar, Jind, Kaithal, Karnal, Kurukshetra, Mahendragarh, Panipat, Rewari, Rohtak, Sirsa, Yamunanagar, Mewat and Palwal. SP posts for Ambala, Charkhi Dadri and Hansi are also part of the revised structure.
Two SP posts have been allocated to the State Vigilance Bureau, while three Commandant posts have been provided in the Haryana Armed Police.
Gurugram and Faridabad have received multiple DCP-level positions covering areas such as headquarters, Manesar, NIT, Ballabhgarh and different zones of the two cities. Additional SP-level positions have also been provided for Security, State Crime Branch, Railway and Commando units.
Cadre expansion reflects changing policing needs
The increase of nine IPS posts comes as Haryana faces growing policing demands linked to urbanisation, industrial expansion, the state’s NCR footprint and increasingly complex crime patterns.
By expanding the senior leadership structure across districts, metropolitan areas, specialised units, training institutions and police headquarters, the revised cadre is expected to provide greater flexibility in officer deployment and distribution of responsibilities.
The notification therefore marks more than a numerical increase in Haryana’s IPS strength. It also represents a broader restructuring of senior policing responsibilities to match the state’s changing administrative and security requirements.
