By Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, while addressing a programme at the Shri Gorakhnath Temple in Gorakhpur, invoked the history of the Somnath temple and Mahmud Ghazni to argue that foreign invasions of India were not limited to the pursuit of wealth. He said, according to his account, that the larger objective was to weaken the country’s Sanatan traditions, knowledge systems and civilisational identity.
Speaking at the inaugural session of a lecture programme held as part of the seven-day death anniversary commemoration at the Gorakhnath temple in 2026, Yogi linked episodes from the Ramayana period with later foreign invasions. He said both accounts illustrated the importance of protecting India’s intellectual and spiritual traditions and urged people to verify facts before accepting or spreading claims.
Yogi recalls Somnath and Ghazni episode
Referring to the Somnath temple, Yogi said Mahmud Ghazni’s attack should not be viewed only through the lens of plunder. He claimed that the invader’s objective also included an attempt to damage India’s Sanatan tradition.
Yogi referred to an account in which priests at Somnath told Ghazni that he could take the wealth from the temple if that was his purpose. According to the Chief Minister’s version of the episode, Ghazni responded that taking wealth was not his only objective and that he wanted to strike at India’s Sanatan tradition.
Yogi said the temple was subsequently looted and its idols were destroyed.
The Chief Minister used the episode to make a broader point about how historical events are interpreted. He urged people to distinguish between verified information and claims that create confusion, saying that society must remain alert to misinformation and propaganda.
Ramayana reference and preservation of knowledge
Yogi also went back to the Ramayana period to underline what he described as the long-standing importance of protecting knowledge and spiritual traditions in India.
Referring to Lord Ram’s stay in the Dandakaranya region, he said Ram encountered sages whose ashrams had been disturbed by rakshasas. According to Yogi, the sages sought protection, after which Lord Ram took action against those responsible.
Drawing a parallel from this episode, Yogi said India’s civilisational strength has historically been connected with its knowledge traditions. He argued that protecting these traditions requires people to remain aware and not allow doubt or misinformation to weaken their understanding of history and culture.
Yogi urges people to verify facts
A significant part of the Chief Minister’s message focused on the need to establish facts before making claims. He called on people to speak only after verifying information and to remain cautious about those who, he said, deliberately spread misleading narratives.
Yogi presented the Somnath episode as an example of why historical events should be understood in a wider context rather than being reduced to a question of wealth or material gain.
His remarks at the Gorakhpur event combined references to the Ramayana, the history of Somnath and the broader question of preserving India’s cultural and intellectual traditions. The speech also placed emphasis on fact-checking and public awareness amid what he described as attempts to create confusion around India’s history and civilisational heritage.
