Srinagar, Jammu & Kashmir | July 3, 2025 — The highly anticipated Amarnath Yatra begins today, marking the commencement of one of the holiest and most challenging pilgrimages in India. Every year, thousands of devotees from across the world embark on this sacred journey to the Amarnath Cave nestled in the Himalayas of Jammu and Kashmir.

🌄 A Spiritual Pilgrimage to the Holy Cave

The Amarnath Yatra is dedicated to Lord Shiva, one of the principal deities in Hinduism. The cave, located at an altitude of 3,888 meters (12,756 feet), is famous for housing a natural ice Shiva Lingam, which is believed to form and melt with the lunar cycle. This miraculous formation is regarded as a symbol of divine presence and is a key focus of the pilgrimage.

The Yatra usually spans for around two months during the Shravan month of the Hindu calendar, and it culminates with the Shravan Purnima, which typically falls in August. Pilgrims travel on foot or via helicopters to reach the cave, making the trek a physically demanding yet spiritually rewarding experience.

The pilgrimage traditionally begins from Pahalgam (for the traditional 45 km route) or Baltal (a shorter 14 km route). Devotees who opt for the longer route can stop at Chandanwari, Sheshnag Lake, and Panchtarni before reaching the holy cave. The shorter route from Baltal is quicker but still physically demanding, with pilgrims facing challenging weather conditions, high altitudes, and tough terrains.

The government, in collaboration with security forces, has made meticulous arrangements for the Yatra’s safe and smooth conduct. This includes medical camps, security personnel, and facilities to ensure the safety and well-being of the pilgrims.

With the growing number of devotees, the Jammu & Kashmir Government has taken extensive steps to provide security, healthcare facilities, and logistics for the pilgrims. High-level security teams are stationed along the route, and the Indian Army, along with local police forces, are overseeing the entire process to ensure the safety of the devotees. Additionally, medical camps, oxygen support, and helicopter services are in place for emergencies, as the trek involves traveling at high altitudes.

To ensure the health and safety of the pilgrims, only those with a valid registration and health certificates are allowed to participate in the Yatra.
