Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat has said that India stands at a crucial moment in its history and is increasingly being viewed as a nation capable of offering a balanced path to the world. Speaking during the RSS centenary year celebrations in Nagpur, Bhagwat stressed that the country must strengthen its social foundations if it is to play a larger role on the global stage.
Addressing volunteers at the Sangh Shiksha Varga training camp on Thursday, Bhagwat argued that the world is witnessing growing instability, conflicts and development models that often prioritise economic gains over environmental and social well-being. In such circumstances, he said, India has a unique opportunity to present an alternative vision rooted in harmony, responsibility and collective progress.
According to Bhagwat, the global perception of power is often associated with domination and self-interest. He noted that many powerful nations use their influence to shape events beyond their borders, sometimes at the cost of smaller countries. India, he said, should chart a different course.
“When India becomes stronger, it should be known as a nation that carries others along rather than imposing its will,” he remarked, emphasizing that the country’s rise should be guided by cooperation and shared growth.
Bhagwat also highlighted what he described as India’s civilisational strength. He said the country’s cultural traditions have long promoted a balance between individual freedom, societal welfare and respect for nature. While many nations focus on one or two of these aspects, India’s philosophy seeks to integrate all three, he added.
The RSS chief further pointed to India’s long history, rich knowledge systems and scientific heritage. Despite possessing these strengths, he observed, the country spent centuries under foreign rule. He suggested that the primary reason was not the superiority of invaders, but the weakening of societal preparedness and internal cohesion over time.
Drawing a lesson from history, Bhagwat urged society to rebuild that preparedness. He said an organised, aware and confident society would be essential for India to achieve its aspirations in the coming decades.
The remarks come at a time when the RSS is marking its 100th year with a series of nationwide programmes focused on social outreach, organisational expansion and ideological discussions. Bhagwat said the growing awareness and unity within Hindu society would play a significant role in shaping the nation’s future.
His address underscored a broader message: India’s global influence will depend not only on economic or military strength, but also on the strength, discipline and preparedness of its society.
