Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has said that merit and transparency must remain at the heart of recruitment to government services, stressing that selection processes should give deserving candidates a fair opportunity. He said the revised recruitment system for Group B posts in the Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB) was an important move towards making government appointments more transparent and merit-based.
Adityanath made the remarks while interacting with 40 newly selected Group B officers of the UPPCB, comprising 26 Assistant Environmental Engineers and 14 Assistant Scientific Officers. He said their appointment, carried out after a long gap, would strengthen the board and add fresh momentum to its work in environmental protection.
New recruitment system gives greater weight to written exam
The Chief Minister said the officers would have an important responsibility as their work directly affects Uttar Pradesh’s environment and, consequently, the health of its people. He asked them to approach their duties with technical competence, sensitivity and integrity.
The latest recruitment was conducted under changes made to the UPPCB’s 1995 service regulations. Under the earlier system, Group B appointments were largely based on interviews. The revised process gives 85% weightage to the written examination and 15% to the interview, putting greater emphasis on objective assessment of candidates.
IIT-Kanpur conducted written examination
For the 40 posts, IIT-Kanpur conducted the written examination on April 27. The interview stage was handled by four panels headed by retired High Court judges. The final selection result was announced on July 8.
Among the 40 candidates selected through the new process, 21 are IIT graduates and eight are women, according to details shared during the interaction.
One-month training programme for selected officers
Adityanath also stressed the importance of training before the officers take up their responsibilities. He directed them to understand the practical challenges faced at the field level and familiarise themselves with the functioning of the department.
A one-month training programme has been prescribed for the newly selected officers. As part of it, they are also undergoing a week-long programme at IIM-Lucknow, aimed at strengthening their understanding of administration and professional responsibilities.
The Chief Minister said the broader objective was to build a government recruitment system in which appointments are based on merit, while ensuring transparency and fairness throughout the selection process.
