India Celebrates 26th Kargil Vijay Diwas: Honouring the Bravery and Sacrifice of the Armed Forces
July 26, 2025 — New Delhi
Today, the nation stands united in pride and gratitude as it marks the 26th Kargil Vijay Diwas, a day that commemorates the extraordinary courage, resilience, and sacrifice of the Indian armed forces during the Kargil War of 1999.
Celebrated annually on 26th July, this day honours the historic victory of India in Operation Vijay, a military campaign launched to evict infiltrators and Pakistani soldiers who had occupied strategic peaks in the Kargil sector of Jammu & Kashmir. The conflict, which lasted over two months, resulted in a hard-fought victory for India and reasserted its control over the high-altitude posts.
A Salute to the Martyrs
On this solemn yet proud day, tributes are being paid across the country to the brave soldiers who laid down their lives for the sovereignty and safety of the nation. Ceremonies were held at Kargil War Memorial in Dras, where senior military officials, family members of martyrs, and political leaders gathered to pay homage.
President, Prime Minister, and key government dignitaries took to social media and public platforms to express their heartfelt gratitude to the fallen heroes and their families.
“Kargil Vijay Diwas is a symbol of India's indomitable spirit and the unwavering courage of our soldiers. We remember their supreme sacrifice with deepest respect,” said Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his message.
Operation Vijay: A Testament to Military Excellence
The Kargil War, which broke out in May 1999, saw Indian soldiers fighting under some of the toughest battlefield conditions, including high altitudes, steep terrain, and freezing temperatures. Despite these challenges, the Indian Army showcased unmatched bravery and strategy, reclaiming all the captured posts by July 26, 1999.
The successful culmination of Operation Vijay restored India's territorial integrity and dealt a significant blow to the misadventures of cross-border infiltration.
Nationwide Celebrations and Remembrance
Schools, colleges, military academies, and institutions across India are organizing commemorative events, patriotic performances, and panel discussions to educate the younger generation about the significance of this day.
Social media platforms are flooded with tributes, messages of solidarity, and patriotic sentiments underlining the spirit of unity, sacrifice, and national pride.
Legacy of the Brave
Kargil Vijay Diwas is not just a remembrance of a military victory—it is a reminder of the unbreakable bond between the Indian Army and its people, a tribute to the sacrifices made by soldiers and their families, and a celebration of India's unwavering spirit in the face of adversity.
As the tricolour flies high today, the nation bows its head in remembrance and raises its voice in pride — “Jai Hind, Jai Bharat.”
