BL Santosh Calls Bengal Polls a “Civilizational Battle,” Trinamool and Congress Hit Back

The political temperature in West Bengal has risen further after B. L. Santosh described the upcoming Assembly elections as a “civilizational battle,” underlining the Bharatiya Janata Party’s aggressive pitch ahead of the high-stakes contest.

Santosh’s remarks, made during a recent interaction on the party’s electoral strategy, suggested that winning West Bengal was crucial for addressing what he termed a larger demographic and cultural challenge. The statement quickly drew attention, with political opponents accusing the BJP of trying to polarise voters in a sensitive election environment.

Leaders from the Trinamool Congress reacted sharply, calling the remarks divisive and contrary to Bengal’s tradition of social harmony. Party spokespersons said the state has always stood for inclusiveness and coexistence, and attempts to frame elections in civilizational terms were aimed at creating unnecessary fear among communities.

The Indian National Congress also criticised the BJP leader’s comments, alleging that such statements were part of a broader strategy to shift focus away from governance and development issues. Congress leaders argued that elections should revolve around jobs, infrastructure and public welfare rather than ideological confrontation.

Within BJP circles, however, the remarks are being viewed as part of a broader narrative aimed at energising the party’s core supporters and highlighting ideological differences with regional parties. Party strategists believe West Bengal remains one of the most politically competitive states, and strong messaging will be key to mobilising voters.

With campaigning yet to fully gather pace, the controversy indicates that the Bengal elections are likely to witness sharp rhetoric and intense political battles in the coming months.
