‘Each BJP Candidate Is Modi’: PM’s New Poll Pitch in Bengal
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday introduced a fresh campaign pitch during his rally in Siliguri, saying that every BJP candidate contesting in West Bengal represents “Modi”.
Addressing a large gathering at Kawakhali ground, Modi urged voters to give the BJP a chance after decades of governance by the Congress, Left parties, and the Trinamool Congress (TMC).
“You have seen all parties for years. This time, give Modi a chance. Each of our candidates is Modi,” he said.
The statement comes amid a high-intensity election campaign in the state, where Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has also declared that she is contesting across all 294 seats.
Focus on Women Safety, Jobs and Infiltration
Reinforcing his message, Modi promised better safety for women, employment opportunities for youth, and strict action against infiltration if the BJP comes to power.
He also repeated his earlier slogan: “Bhoy out, bhorosa in” (fear out, trust in), positioning the BJP as a party of stability and development.
Modi Targets TMC Over North Bengal Development
The Prime Minister accused the TMC government of neglecting north Bengal, a region considered politically significant due to its influence on multiple Assembly seats.
“North Bengal has not received the attention it deserves. The current government’s policies reflect bias and neglect towards this region, including tea workers, tribal communities, and youth,” Modi said.
He alleged that the state government’s allocation priorities reflected appeasement politics rather than balanced development.
Siliguri Corridor and Strategic Importance Highlighted
Modi emphasised the importance of the Siliguri Corridor, often called the “Chicken’s Neck”, which connects mainland India to the Northeast.
He said the Centre is working to strengthen infrastructure and connectivity in the region, citing projects such as:
- Sevoke–Rangpo railway line connecting Sikkim
- Introduction of Vande Bharat and Amrit Bharat trains
“This corridor is vital for national security and connectivity. We are taking continuous steps to strengthen it,” he said.
Comparison with Assam Development Model
Drawing comparisons, Modi highlighted development work in Assam, claiming improvements in education, healthcare, employment, and land rights for tea garden workers.
He alleged that similar progress has not been seen in north Bengal under the TMC government.
Outreach to Matua and Namasudra Communities
The Prime Minister also reached out to Matua and Namasudra communities, assuring them of support and reiterating the government’s commitment to implementing the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).
“We will ensure citizenship for all eligible people under the Constitution. Do not be misled by false information,” Modi said.
Sports Push and Local Talent Recognition
In a lighter moment, Modi praised Richa Ghosh, a cricketer from Siliguri who was part of India’s World Cup-winning team, highlighting her confidence and performance.
He also mentioned table tennis player Mantu Ghosh, stating that the region has produced several talented sportspersons.
Modi promised that if the BJP comes to power, a sports university in north Bengal would be established to nurture young talent.
Alliance Support Visible at Rally
The rally saw participation from regional allies, including leaders from Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) and Gorkha National Liberation Front (GNLF), indicating broader coalition support for the BJP in the region.
