Mamata Banerjee Refuses to Step Down After Bengal Poll Setback, Calls Result “Morally Unacceptable”

A day after a decisive verdict in the West Bengal Assembly elections, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee struck a defiant note, making it clear she has no immediate plans to resign despite her party’s sharp electoral setback.

Addressing the media from her residence on Tuesday, Banerjee insisted that the outcome did not reflect a genuine defeat. She argued that while the results may stand officially, she believes the mandate was not fairly earned. “There is no question of resignation,” she said, maintaining that her party, the All India Trinamool Congress, had not truly lost the people’s support.

The numbers, however, tell a different story. The Bharatiya Janata Party secured a commanding victory, winning over 200 seats in the 293 constituencies where counting took place. The Trinamool Congress was reduced to around 80 seats, marking one of its most significant electoral reversals in recent years. Adding to the setback, Banerjee herself lost from the Bhabanipur constituency to BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari.

Despite the scale of the defeat, Banerjee questioned the role of the Election Commission of India, suggesting that the electoral process itself was skewed. She claimed the real contest was not against the BJP but against the system overseeing the polls—an allegation that is likely to keep political tensions high in the days ahead.

Her refusal to step down also raises constitutional questions, though experts point out that the end of the current government’s term on May 7 will automatically conclude its authority. Whether or not a formal resignation is submitted, the transition to a new government is expected to proceed as scheduled.

In her first public remarks after the results, Banerjee also indicated a shift in focus towards national politics. She said leaders from across the opposition spectrum—including Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi—had reached out to her, and she intends to play a more active role in strengthening the broader opposition alliance.

At the same time, her comments about stepping back from positions of power hinted at a possible recalibration of her political role. “I don’t care about the chair,” she said, emphasising that her priority remains the people of the state.

Even as the BJP prepares to form the next government, Banerjee’s strong response underscores that the political battle in Bengal is far from over. With sharp disagreements over the legitimacy of the verdict and future strategies taking shape, the state appears headed for a charged post-election phase.
