Himanta Biswa Sarma Sworn In as Assam CM Again, NDA Begins Third Consecutive Term

Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday took oath as the Chief Minister of Assam for a second consecutive term, marking the return of the BJP-led NDA government in the state for the third straight time. The swearing-in ceremony, held at the Veterinary Ground in Khanapara, Guwahati, turned into a major political show of strength for the ruling alliance.

Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya administered the oath of office to Sarma along with four ministers from the NDA alliance. Those inducted into the cabinet included Rameswar Teli, Ajanta Neog, Atul Bora and Charan Boro.

The event witnessed the presence of several top national leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. Chief ministers and senior leaders from multiple NDA-ruled states also attended the ceremony, highlighting the political importance of Assam in the BJP’s Northeast strategy.

Before taking oath, Sarma shared a message on social media invoking the blessings of Maa Kamakhya and Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev, expressing hope that Assam would move towards greater peace, prosperity and development in the coming years.

The NDA secured a commanding victory in the recently concluded Assembly elections, winning 102 seats in the 126-member House. The BJP alone bagged 82 seats, while alliance partners Asom Gana Parishad and Bodoland People’s Front won 10 seats each.

Speaking after the ceremony, Atul Bora described the NDA’s third term as a “golden phase” for Assam and said the alliance would continue working towards economic growth, infrastructure expansion and preservation of Assamese identity.

The BJP has consistently projected development, regional pride and protection of indigenous land rights as key pillars of its Assam politics. In recent months, Sarma repeatedly highlighted the government’s anti-encroachment drives and efforts to reclaim land across the state.

On the eve of the swearing-in, the Chief Minister reiterated that “Jati, Mati and Bheti” — community, land and identity — would remain central to the government’s agenda. Political observers believe the BJP’s decisive victory reflects the party’s growing dominance in the Northeast since first coming to power in Assam in 2016 under former Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal.

With a fresh mandate and a strong majority, the new Assam government is now expected to focus on infrastructure projects, industrial investment, border protection and employment generation in the state.
