West Bengal is preparing for one of its biggest public wellness events in recent years as Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to lead the national celebrations of International Yoga Day in Kolkata on June 21. The event is expected to draw participation from thousands of people across the state, marking a significant moment for the promotion of yoga and holistic health in eastern India.
With this year’s theme, “Yoga for Healthy Ageing,” the celebrations are being planned on a large scale. State authorities have been directed to ensure widespread participation, extending activities beyond Kolkata to districts, towns, and rural areas. The objective is to take the message of fitness, preventive healthcare, and wellness to every corner of the state.
According to official directions issued by the state administration, government departments and district authorities will organize yoga awareness campaigns, training sessions, and community events across Bengal. Programmes are expected to be held in diverse locations, including tea gardens in North Bengal, heritage sites, riverfront areas along the Ganga, and remote villages stretching from Darjeeling to the Sundarbans.
The Prime Minister’s presence is expected to give additional momentum to Yoga Day celebrations in the state. Yoga practitioners and AYUSH supporters believe the event will encourage greater public engagement with traditional Indian wellness practices. Many experts in the field view the national event as an opportunity to increase awareness about yoga’s role in improving physical and mental health, particularly among younger generations and senior citizens.
Organisations associated with Ayurveda and yoga have welcomed the decision to host the national celebration in Kolkata. They believe the large-scale outreach planned this year could significantly expand participation and bring yoga closer to grassroots communities. Special sessions are also expected to involve government employees, healthcare workers, tribal communities, students, and local self-government representatives.
Preparations are reportedly underway for a major gathering in Kolkata, with authorities also keeping alternate arrangements ready considering the monsoon season. Alongside the main event, district-level programmes are expected to create a statewide atmosphere of celebration around yoga and healthy living.
The Prime Minister is also likely to visit West Bengal a day before the event for other public engagements. Political observers see the visit as important not only from a cultural and wellness perspective but also as an opportunity to strengthen the Centre’s outreach in the state.
As June 21 approaches, Bengal is set to witness an unprecedented push for yoga awareness, with the national spotlight firmly on Kolkata and the state’s efforts to promote wellness through one of India’s most celebrated global initiatives.
