RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat has described the Battle of Haldighati as far more than a military confrontation, saying it represents India’s enduring commitment to protecting its culture, freedom and self-respect. Speaking at an event in Udaipur commemorating the 450th anniversary of Maharana Pratap’s victory at Haldighati, Bhagwat said the historic battle continues to inspire the nation with its message of resilience and unity.
Addressing a gathering at the commemorative programme, Bhagwat said Maharana Pratap’s legacy lies not only in his battlefield courage but also in his ability to unite society across caste, community and sectarian lines. He said these values remain relevant in modern India as the country strives for social harmony and national progress.
The RSS chief challenged what he described as long-standing misconceptions surrounding the Battle of Haldighati. Referring to historical accounts, including those written by Mughal historians, Bhagwat argued that the conflict demonstrated the determination of Maharana Pratap’s forces and conveyed a powerful message that foreign powers could not easily subdue India’s spirit.
According to Bhagwat, Maharana Pratap’s greatest strengths were his unwavering commitment to truth, his moral character and the trust he enjoyed among the people. He said these qualities enabled the Rajput ruler to continue his struggle despite having significantly fewer resources than the Mughal Empire led by Emperor Akbar.
Highlighting the broader significance of the battle, Bhagwat said Haldighati symbolised the defence of India’s cultural identity and civilisational values. He added that Maharana Pratap’s sacrifices continue to remind future generations of the importance of preserving freedom, dignity and national pride even in the face of overwhelming challenges.
Calling for greater unity in contemporary society, Bhagwat observed that while differences of opinion are natural in a democracy, people have historically come together whenever the nation has faced adversity. He urged citizens to draw inspiration from Maharana Pratap’s ideals of courage, sacrifice, patriotism and self-respect while working towards a stronger and more self-reliant India.
He concluded by saying that the legacy of Haldighati represents the triumph of righteousness over injustice and dignity over subjugation, making it a timeless source of inspiration for the country.
Earlier, while speaking in Kerala, Bhagwat also responded to criticism over demands that the RSS be formally registered. Referring to remarks made by Karnataka Home Minister Priyank Kharge, he dismissed the issue as political rhetoric and said the organisation has always functioned openly.
Bhagwat maintained that the RSS has never operated in secrecy and noted that it has faced government bans in the past, both of which were later lifted. He argued that those developments themselves acknowledged the organisation’s existence and reiterated that the Sangh remains committed to carrying out its activities transparently.
