By Prime Minister Narendra Modi has appealed for calm and compassion following the controversy over abusive slogans raised against him during a student protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar. Instead of calling for harsh action, the Prime Minister said the focus should be on guiding young people who may have lost their way, stressing that hatred and abusive language cannot resolve differences.
Addressing the issue in a video message, Modi acknowledged that the remarks made during the protest had deeply crossed the boundaries of civil discourse. However, he said the incident should become an opportunity for society to help young people learn from their mistakes rather than pushing them further into confrontation.
Referring to the protest, the Prime Minister said the entire country had witnessed what happened at Jantar Mantar, where, according to him, abusive remarks were directed not only at him but also at his late mother. He said such language has no place in a democratic and respectful society.
Despite the personal nature of the remarks, Modi said he does not believe retaliation is the answer. He described the protesters as young individuals who still have the opportunity to correct their actions and contribute positively to society.
“Abuses never solve anything,” the Prime Minister said, urging citizens to support and guide those who have gone astray. He added that youth often make mistakes, but they also possess the ability to learn, grow and change when given the right direction.
Modi also acknowledged that there is frustration among sections of society but maintained that constructive engagement is a better path than prolonged conflict. He appealed to people to avoid responding with anger and instead encourage dialogue and understanding.
Expressing his personal stand, the Prime Minister said he wished to forgive those responsible for the abusive remarks and urged society to adopt the same approach. He called on citizens to work together for the country’s progress instead of allowing divisions to deepen.
Meanwhile, legal proceedings have been initiated over the incident. A Zero FIR was initially registered under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita before being transferred to Delhi’s Parliament Street Police Station for further investigation, as the alleged incident took place within its jurisdiction.
The protest was organised over allegations of examination paper leaks, and reactions to the police action have varied. While some have supported legal intervention, others have argued that objectionable speech during protests should not automatically invite criminal prosecution, keeping the debate over free expression and accountability in focus.
