Andhra Pradesh Moves to Notify Amaravati as Permanent Capital, Assembly Backs Historic Step

In a significant political and administrative move, the Andhra Pradesh government has initiated the process of officially notifying Amaravati as the state’s permanent capital, a decision Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu described as a historic step toward stability and long-term development. The announcement was made during a specially convened Assembly session, signalling the government’s intent to put an end to years of uncertainty over the state’s capital city.

The move comes after months of discussions between the state leadership and the Union government, with Andhra Pradesh leaders pushing for formal recognition of Amaravati at the national level. According to officials, the Centre had earlier sought a clear and written legislative position from the state before moving forward, prompting the government to bring the proposal before the Assembly and formally notify Amaravati as the permanent capital.

Addressing the Assembly, Naidu said the decision was aimed at ensuring uninterrupted development and administrative stability for Andhra Pradesh. He stressed that a clear and legally backed capital city is essential for attracting investments, building infrastructure, and strengthening governance. The chief minister also pointed out that prolonged uncertainty over the capital had slowed development in recent years and affected investor confidence.

The decision also reflects a shift from the earlier three-capital proposal introduced during the tenure of former Chief Minister Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, which had proposed separate capitals for legislative, executive, and judicial functions. The current government has argued that a single, well-developed capital like Amaravati would provide clarity and ensure more efficient administration, while also restoring the original vision of a modern capital city.

Officials indicated that once the Assembly formally approves the proposal, the file will be forwarded to the Union government for final clearance and gazette notification. Legal experts say that such recognition would strengthen Amaravati’s status and make it difficult for future governments to alter the capital arrangement without significant legislative changes.

The move is being seen as a major political and developmental statement by the state government, aimed at reassuring investors, farmers who gave land for the capital project, and businesses waiting for policy stability. With Amaravati now moving closer to formal recognition, the government hopes the decision will accelerate infrastructure projects, improve administrative efficiency, and give Andhra Pradesh a clear and stable governance centre for the future.
