BCCI Asks KKR to Release Mustafizur Rahman From IPL 2026 Squad Amid Political Tensions
In a major development underscoring the growing overlap between cricket and geopolitics, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has formally directed Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to release Bangladesh fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman from their squad ahead of the IPL 2026 season.
BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed the decision, stating that the directive came after a phase of mounting public and political pressure. While the Indian cricket board had earlier adopted a “wait and watch” approach, Saikia said the call was taken due to “recent developments all across” — a clear reference to escalating diplomatic concerns and reports of civil unrest in Bangladesh, which have triggered protests within India.
Mustafizur Rahman found himself at the centre of controversy after KKR acquired him for a record ₹9.20 crore at the December IPL auction, making him the most expensive Bangladeshi player in IPL history.

What BCCI’s Decision Means for KKR
The directive comes as a major blow for Kolkata Knight Riders, both tactically and financially. KKR had invested heavily in Mustafizur, viewing him as their primary death-overs specialist. His trademark cutters, experience in Indian conditions, and effectiveness on slower Eden Gardens surfaces made him a vital part of their bowling strategy.
With Mustafizur out, KKR face a significant void in their pace attack, placing added responsibility on Sri Lanka’s Matheesha Pathirana to handle the crunch overs. The loss also disrupts KKR’s overseas combination, which was likely built around Sunil Narine, Cameron Green, Pathirana, and Mustafizur as the bowling anchor.
The franchise may now be forced to lean more on Indian pacers such as Harshit Rana and Umran Malik or reshuffle their overseas slots to accommodate an additional foreign batter like Rachin Ravindra.
Financial Uncertainty Over Replacement Player
From a financial standpoint, uncertainty remains over whether KKR will receive the ₹9.20 crore back into their auction purse. While the BCCI has cleared the franchise to sign a replacement player, there is no official confirmation yet on whether the full amount will be refunded.
If the funds are not returned, KKR may have to settle for a lower-cost replacement, potentially weakening their squad depth ahead of IPL 2026.
India vs Bangladesh Bilateral Cricket Under Cloud
The episode also casts a shadow over India–Bangladesh bilateral cricket ties. The two boards had postponed a white-ball series last year, with the Bangladesh Cricket Board recently proposing September as the new window. However, the BCCI has not committed to the schedule.
Sources indicate that the Indian board remains cautious and may refrain from resuming bilateral cricket unless the political situation in Bangladesh stabilises.
