Centre Urges Calm as LPG Supply Concerns Rise, Says Stocks Adequate for Consumers

The Union government on Wednesday appealed to citizens not to rush into booking additional LPG cylinders amid growing concerns about possible supply disruptions triggered by geopolitical tensions in West Asia. Officials said the country currently has sufficient energy supplies and warned that panic bookings could strain distribution systems unnecessarily.

The advisory came as fears of shortages spread in several cities following reports of disruptions in global energy routes linked to the ongoing conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran. Government representatives said while the international situation is being closely monitored, India’s energy supply chains remain stable and contingency arrangements are already in place.

Speaking at a press briefing, officials said India presently has access to roughly 55 lakh barrels of crude oil per day, a level that exceeds the average volumes the country typically receives through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz during the same period. Authorities emphasised that diversified procurement strategies and alternative sourcing options are helping maintain steady fuel supplies despite geopolitical tensions affecting maritime trade routes.

Officials noted that India’s oil companies have been working for years to expand the range of countries from which they import crude and LPG. This strategy, they said, has helped reduce the risks associated with relying heavily on a single shipping corridor or region. As a result, supply chains have continued to function even as concerns around the security of key shipping lanes intensify.

Despite these assurances, anxiety about potential shortages has already begun influencing consumer behaviour. In some areas, LPG distributors have reported an increase in booking requests as households attempt to secure additional cylinders as a precaution. Authorities said such panic buying could temporarily disrupt normal delivery cycles and urged consumers to follow the regular refill schedule.

The pressure on supply logistics has also coincided with a recent increase in LPG prices. Earlier this month, the price of a 14.2-kilogram domestic cylinder was raised by ₹60 in several cities. In the national capital, a household cylinder is currently priced at around ₹913, while the cost of a 19-kilogram commercial cylinder used by restaurants and businesses has climbed to approximately ₹1,883 following a separate price adjustment.

Restaurants and small food businesses have been among the sectors most affected by tighter LPG availability. In metropolitan areas such as Bengaluru, Mumbai and Gurugram, several eateries have begun adjusting their kitchen operations to cope with supply constraints. Some establishments have switched to alternative cooking methods, including coal-based tandoors, induction cooktops and electric ovens, in an effort to manage fuel consumption.

Industry representatives say the hospitality sector, which relies heavily on commercial cylinders, has felt the immediate impact of supply prioritisation measures. Authorities have directed oil companies to ensure uninterrupted LPG availability for households, which account for the vast majority of the country’s consumption.

There have also been scattered reports of inflated prices in the informal market, with cylinders allegedly being sold at significantly higher rates than the official price. Officials said enforcement agencies are monitoring such activities and warned that strict action would be taken against hoarding or black-marketing.

Government officials reiterated that there is no nationwide shortage of LPG and urged consumers to avoid panic-driven purchases. They stressed that maintaining normal consumption patterns would help ensure smooth distribution and prevent unnecessary stress on the country’s fuel supply system during a period of global uncertainty.
