A devastating fire in East Delhi’s Vivek Vihar early Sunday morning claimed nine lives, including a toddler, leaving a neighbourhood in shock and raising fresh concerns about fire safety in densely packed residential areas. The blaze tore through a four-storey building before emergency teams could bring it under control.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the incident and announced financial assistance for the victims’ families. In a message shared publicly, he described the loss of lives as “extremely distressing” and extended condolences to those affected. An ex-gratia of ₹2 lakh has been announced for the families of the deceased, while the injured will receive ₹50,000 from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund.

According to officials, the fire broke out in the early hours, with the first alert reaching authorities just before 4 am. Teams from the Delhi Fire Services were dispatched immediately, and by 5 am, at least 14 fire tenders had been deployed to battle the flames. However, the narrow layout of the building and its surroundings made rescue efforts significantly more challenging.
Senior police officer Rajendra Prasad Meena noted that the structure had flats on both sides—front and rear—limiting access points for firefighters. This delay proved critical as teams struggled to reach those trapped inside in time.
Among the victims was a 1.5-year-old child, whose death has underscored the human cost of the tragedy. Several bodies were discovered on the second floor after the fire was finally brought under control. Authorities said that a full-scale search operation could only begin after 8 am, once the flames had been completely extinguished and the structure deemed safe to enter.
While the immediate focus remains on relief and support for the affected families, the incident has once again brought attention to fire preparedness and compliance in residential buildings across the capital. Officials are expected to investigate the cause of the blaze and examine whether safety norms were followed.
For residents of Vivek Vihar, Sunday’s tragedy is a grim reminder of how quickly lives can be upended—and how critical timely rescue access can be in preventing such losses.
