Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday (December 20, 2025) addressed the BJP’s Taherpur rally in West Bengal virtually after dense fog prevented his helicopter from landing at the helipad near the venue in Nadia district.
PM Modi’s chopper was forced to return to Kolkata airport after hovering over the Taherpur helipad due to poor visibility, officials said. The Prime Minister later addressed the Parivartan Sankalpa Sabha via videoconferencing from Kolkata.
“I apologise that bad weather prevented me from reaching the venue in Bengal’s Nadia,” PM Modi said while addressing the rally.
Referring to recent political developments, the Prime Minister said that after the NDA’s victory in Bihar, the people of West Bengal now needed “freedom from Maha-jangalraj,” taking a swipe at the ruling dispensation in the state.
PM Modi had arrived in Kolkata at around 10.40 am and was scheduled to travel by helicopter to Taherpur to launch highway projects in West Bengal, followed by a political rally.
Meanwhile, chaos broke out at the Netaji Park rally ground as a massive crowd attempted to enter the already packed venue. Police faced difficulties controlling the situation after sections of the crowd broke a VIP gate and tried to breach security barricades.
The Prime Minister is later scheduled to travel to Guwahati for a two-day visit to Assam, where he will attend multiple official and political programmes.
