Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi launched a strong attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday, alleging that the Prime Minister had “hijacked Parliament” as the Winter Session got underway. Gogoi claimed that instead of engaging in meaningful debate or addressing pressing national concerns, the government’s sole focus was on pushing through its legislative agenda without adequate discussion.
In a detailed post on X, Gogoi said the Winter Session should have been an opportunity for the government to answer critical questions raised by the opposition on issues such as unemployment, inflation, the situation along the border, and growing concerns over federalism. According to him, the ruling establishment has repeatedly avoided dialogue, choosing instead to prioritise its bills over democratic deliberation.
The Congress leader further alleged that the Modi government has systemically weakened parliamentary traditions by reducing the space for debate, curtailing discussions on key issues, and rushing important legislation. Gogoi also criticised what he described as the government’s reluctance to engage with opposition MPs, accusing it of using its majority to bypass established procedures. He said this approach not only undermines the spirit of parliamentary democracy but also deprives citizens of robust policy debate.
As the Winter Session continues, Gogoi’s remarks reflect growing tensions between the government and the opposition, with both sides preparing for heated exchanges in the days ahead. The Congress has indicated that it will continue to press the government for answers, while the ruling party is expected to focus on clearing its legislative priorities during the short session.
