Modi, Jaishankar Push Global Outreach as West Asia Energy Strikes Raise Tensions

India has stepped up diplomatic efforts to calm rising tensions in West Asia, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar reaching out to world leaders amid escalating attacks on energy infrastructure across the Gulf region. The move reflects growing concern in New Delhi over the impact of the conflict on global energy supplies and regional stability.

The urgency of the situation became evident after fresh strikes targeted major gas fields and oil facilities, raising fears of a wider disruption to energy markets. In response, India has called for restraint from all sides and emphasised the need to return to dialogue and diplomacy, signalling a more balanced and cautious approach as the conflict intensifies.

In one of the key conversations, Modi spoke with Emmanuel Macron, with both leaders agreeing to work closely to reduce tensions in the region. France echoed India’s call for diplomacy, stressing the importance of preventing further escalation and protecting critical energy routes that affect global markets.

New Delhi also expressed strong concern over attacks on civilian and energy infrastructure, describing them as deeply disturbing and unacceptable. This marks a noticeable shift in India’s tone, as it has now broadened its criticism to include all attacks on such facilities, rather than focusing on specific countries. Officials say the priority is to prevent further destabilisation of energy supplies that could affect economies worldwide.

As part of the diplomatic outreach, Modi held discussions with regional leaders including Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and Abdullah II, expressing solidarity with countries affected by the strikes and stressing the importance of keeping energy supply chains secure. Conversations were also held with leaders in Oman and Malaysia, focusing on restoring stability through peaceful engagement.

Meanwhile, Jaishankar has been engaging with key partners, including officials from the UAE and Israel, to ensure coordination on safety measures and regional stability. India has also attempted to build consensus among members of BRICS, though differences among member countries have made a joint statement difficult.

Officials say India’s immediate focus is twofold—protecting global energy stability and ensuring the safety of Indian citizens in the region. Gulf countries have been assisting in facilitating the safe movement of Indians, and New Delhi has acknowledged their support.

With tensions continuing to rise, India’s active phone diplomacy highlights its growing role as a balancing voice in global conflicts, pushing for dialogue while safeguarding its strategic and economic interests.
