Mohan Bhagwat Begins Three-Day Bengal Visit, Meets RSS Functionaries in Burdwan
RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat arrived in West Bengal on Thursday for a three-day visit, his first to the state since the BJP formed its first government there. His visit comes as the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) looks to review its organisational activities in Bengal and discuss its priorities following the completion of its centenary year.

Bhagwat visited the RSS office in Burdwan, where he held a closed-door meeting with functionaries representing north, central and south Bengal. Discussions reportedly focused on the organisation’s progress, its future goals and the next phase of its activities in the state. He also attended a programme at Burdwan Model School and is expected to travel to Kolkata for further meetings.

Closed-Door Meeting Focuses on RSS’s Next Phase

An RSS source said the meeting in Burdwan was attended by functionaries from across the organisation’s three existing regions in Bengal. Bhagwat discussed different aspects of the organisation and outlined its goals after the centenary celebrations.

The visit is taking place at a time when the RSS is seeking to expand its reach in West Bengal, including among younger people and potential new members. According to the source, Bhagwat took note of the organisation’s growth in the state amid the BJP’s recent rise to power.

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari also reached Burdwan and met Bhagwat. He did not speak to the media after the meeting, and no further details of their discussion were immediately available.

RSS Plans to Expand Its Presence in Bengal

RSS functionaries have said the organisation currently operates around 5,500 shakhas in West Bengal and expects the number to double this year. Shakhas are local gatherings where members participate in organisational activities and training.

The organisation has also been working to attract more people, particularly young residents, as part of its wider outreach efforts. Bhagwat’s visit provides an opportunity for senior leaders to assess these activities and discuss how the organisation should proceed in the coming months.

The RSS was founded on Vijaya Dashami in 1925 and completed 100 years in 2025. Its centenary has brought renewed attention to its organisational structure and expansion plans across different states.

Bengal May Be Restructured Into Five Regions

The RSS currently divides West Bengal into three prants, or regions: Uttar Banga, Madhya Banga and Dakshin Banga, broadly corresponding to north, central and south Bengal.

An RSS source said the organisation is now planning to restructure its regional setup, dividing Bengal into five sambhags: Bardhaman, Nabadwip, North Bengal, Medinipur and Kolkata. The proposed arrangement would replace the existing three-region structure with five divisions.

The restructuring is part of the organisational developments being discussed as the RSS reviews its work in the state. Further details about the implementation of the proposed changes were not provided.

Senior RSS Leaders Continue Bengal Outreach

Bhagwat’s visit follows a recent trip to Kolkata by RSS general secretary Dattatreya Hosabale, who inaugurated a new RSS office in New Town.

Bhagwat is expected to continue his meetings in Kolkata on Friday as part of his three-day programme. The visit brings together discussions on organisational expansion, regional restructuring and the RSS’s priorities in West Bengal after its centenary year.
