NDA crosses 200-seat mark again in Bihar, BJP emerges as single largest party

Our correspondent reviews how the NDA and Mahagathbandhan alliances fared in the latest Bihar Assembly election.

The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has once again crossed the 200-seat mark in the 2025 Bihar elections — the second time it has achieved this feat since 2010, when it won 206 seats. In this election, the BJP has emerged as the single largest party in the state. In contrast, the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), which was the single largest party in the previous Assembly with 74 seats, failed to meet its expectations this time. In the 2020 elections, the BJP had secured 74 seats with a 19.46% vote share, while the JD(U) had won 43 seats with 15.39% votes.

Among NDA partners, the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) — which contested alone in the last election and won just one seat — has performed significantly better this time. Other allies, including the Rashtriya Lok Morcha and the Hindustani Awami Morcha, have also recorded strong performances.

Meanwhile, within the Mahagathbandhan, the Congress — which had won 19 seats in the previous election — failed to reach double digits. New parties such as the Jan Suraaj Party and the Jan Shakti Janata Dal were unable to open their accounts.
