Nitish Kumar Signals Leadership Transition, Backs Samrat Choudhary as Possible Successor in Bihar

Bihar politics may be heading toward a leadership transition, with Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Friday dropping a strong hint that Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary could take over the reins of the state in the near future. The remark, made during a public meeting in Saharsa, has intensified speculation about a possible change at the top of the state government.

Kumar, who has led Bihar for nearly two decades across multiple terms, is expected to file his nomination for the Rajya Sabha elections on March 16. Political observers see his possible move to the Upper House as a sign that the veteran leader may soon step away from active leadership in the state, opening the door for a successor within the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

The subtle signal came during Kumar’s ongoing “Samriddhi Yatra,” a statewide outreach programme aimed at highlighting development work carried out under his administration. Addressing a gathering in Saharsa, the Chief Minister placed his hand on Samrat Choudhary’s shoulder and urged people to extend their support to him. He also asked residents to approach the Deputy Chief Minister with feedback about development work in their areas, a gesture many interpreted as a public endorsement.

In his speech, Kumar reflected on the progress made in Bihar during his tenure, recalling the challenges the state faced two decades ago. He said Bihar has undergone significant transformation through infrastructure development, welfare programmes and improved governance, and emphasised that this progress must continue.

“When Bihar moves forward, the country also moves forward,” Kumar told the gathering, adding that various development projects are underway across the state. While stopping short of explicitly naming a successor, he urged people to support Choudhary and expressed confidence that future initiatives for the state would continue.

Samrat Choudhary, a senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party and a prominent face in Bihar politics, belongs to the Kushwaha (Koeri) community—one of the largest Other Backward Class groups in the state. The community holds significant electoral influence, second only to the Yadavs among OBC groups. Political analysts believe this social equation could play a key role in the NDA’s strategy if leadership changes occur.

Other names have also circulated in political discussions about the next Chief Minister, including Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai. However, Choudhary is widely seen as a leading contender within the alliance.

Speaking after Kumar’s address, Choudhary praised the Chief Minister’s leadership and credited him with steering Bihar through difficult economic conditions following the creation of Jharkhand in 2000, which significantly reduced the state’s revenue base. He said the NDA government would continue to work under Kumar’s guidance even if leadership roles change.

Senior JD(U) leader and cabinet minister Vijay Kumar Choudhary also urged people to maintain their trust in the leadership that has governed the state over the past two decades. He said the future government formed by the NDA would still benefit from Nitish Kumar’s experience and advice.

With elections approaching and political alignments shifting, Kumar’s remarks have added a new dimension to Bihar’s political landscape, suggesting that a carefully managed transition of leadership may be on the horizon.
