Why Suryakumar Yadav Was ‘Angry’ at Ishan Kishan During 2nd T20I vs New Zealand

India Clinch Series-Levelling Win in Raipur

India captain Suryakumar Yadav revealed why he was momentarily “angry” with Ishan Kishan during India’s dominant seven-wicket victory over New Zealand in the second T20I at Raipur on Friday.

The comment came after a spectacular batting display that saw India successfully chase down 209, registering a record-breaking win with plenty of deliveries to spare.

India’s Chase Falters Early Before Stunning Counterattack

India’s run chase began on a shaky note despite some assistance from the dew. Sanju Samson was dismissed for 6, Abhishek Sharma fell for a golden duck, and the hosts were struggling at 6 for 2 inside the Powerplay.

What followed was a breathtaking counterattack from Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav, who added 122 runs in just 48 balls for the third wicket, completely turning the match on its head.

Ishan Kishan’s Explosive Knock Sets the Tone

Ishan Kishan led the charge with fearless strokeplay, smashing 76 off 32 balls, including a 21-ball half-century. His aggressive approach put New Zealand on the back foot early, even as Suryakumar played the supporting role initially.

Kishan was eventually dismissed while attempting another big hit off Ish Sodhi, but by then the outcome was virtually sealed in India’s favour.

Why Suryakumar Yadav Was Angry at Kishan

Explaining the moment of frustration, Suryakumar clarified that it stemmed from Kishan dominating the strike during the Powerplay.

“I didn’t know what Ishan had for lunch. I’ve never seen anyone hit the ball like that. This is exactly what we want from our batters — to express themselves and play with freedom. I was angry because he didn’t give me the strike in the Powerplay, but I knew we had time and could cover it,” Suryakumar said after the match.

Suryakumar Shines Ahead of T20 World Cup

Suryakumar Yadav went on to play a match-winning knock of 82 off 37 balls, underlining his importance to the team just weeks ahead of the home T20 World Cup.

He also spoke about enjoying his time off the field and the positive atmosphere within the squad.

“I was batting really well in the nets, spent good time with family and friends, and I’m enjoying what’s happening right now,” he added.

Record-Breaking Chase for India

India’s emphatic finish became the biggest win by balls remaining for a full-member nation while chasing a target of 200 or more. The record surpassed:

  • Pakistan’s 24-ball win against New Zealand in Auckland (2025)
  • Australia’s 23-ball win against West Indies in Basseterre (2025)

Mixed Bowling Effort Praised by Captain

India’s bowlers had mixed success. Arshdeep Singh struggled, conceding 53 runs without a wicket, while Hardik Pandya impressed with figures of 1 for 25 from three overs.

Harshit Rana picked up a wicket maiden but finished with 1 for 35, while spinners Kuldeep Yadav and Varun Chakaravarthy shared three wickets across eight overs, conceding 70 runs. Shivam Dube also chipped in with a wicket.

Suryakumar praised the collective effort, noting that India had feared New Zealand might reach 225–230.

“We thought they would get 225–230. The way Kuldeep, Varun, Dube and Hardik bowled was outstanding. Restricting them to under 210 was a great effort.”

Positive Camp Mood Going Forward

The Indian captain highlighted the relaxed and positive environment within the team, stressing the commitment to playing aggressive cricket while staying disciplined.

“The mood in the camp is very happy. We want to play the same brand of cricket and leave no stone unturned.”
