Who was Osman Hadi? Bangladeshi student uprising leader dies in Singapore hospital after assassination attempt

A prominent leader of Bangladesh’s 2024 student uprising, Osman Hadi, died on Thursday after succumbing to injuries sustained in an assassination attempt, Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) confirmed.

In an official statement, the MFA said Sharif Osman Hadi passed away at the Singapore General Hospital (SGH), where he had been admitted to the Neurosurgical Intensive Care Unit following a gunshot wound to the head.

Hadi was airlifted from Bangladesh to Singapore on December 15 for emergency medical treatment, days after he was shot in the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka. “Despite the best efforts of doctors from SGH and the National Neuroscience Institute, Mr Hadi succumbed to his injuries on December 18, 2025,” the Singapore MFA said.

Singapore authorities are now coordinating with the Bangladesh High Commission to repatriate Hadi’s body to Dhaka.

Shot in Dhaka, airlifted to Singapore

The attack took place on December 12 when unidentified assailants shot Hadi while he was travelling in a battery-powered auto-rickshaw on Culvert Road in Dhaka’s Paltan area. He was initially taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital and later shifted to Evercare Hospital, before being flown to Singapore for specialised treatment.

Hadi was a key figure in Inqilab Manch, an anti-Sheikh Hasina platform that rose to prominence during the July 2024 student-led uprising, which eventually led to Hasina’s ouster. He was also preparing to contest the February elections as an independent candidate from the Dhaka-8 constituency at the time of the attack.

Though Inqilab Manch played a significant role in the uprising, the interim Yunus government later disbanded the group and barred it from contesting national elections, citing security concerns.

Yunus vows probe, announces mourning

Bangladesh’s interim leader Muhammad Yunus vowed a thorough investigation into the killing and announced a one-day state mourning.

“Sharif Osman Hadi, the fearless frontline fighter of the July Uprising and spokesperson of Inqilab Manch, is no more,” Yunus said in a national address, adding that those responsible would be brought to justice.
