Vijay Meets PM Modi in Delhi, Signals Push for Centre-State Coordination

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay on Wednesday held his first official meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi after taking charge earlier this month, marking an important moment in the evolving political dynamics between the Centre and the newly formed Tamil Nadu government.

The visit comes at a time when Vijay, the actor-turned-politician who swept into power with a broad opposition-backed alliance, is trying to balance regional political expectations with the need for smoother coordination with the Union government. His meeting with the Prime Minister at Seva Teerth drew considerable political attention, especially as Tamil Nadu enters a new phase under the TVK-led administration.

Vijay received a ceremonial guard of honour at Tamil Nadu House upon his arrival in the capital. Though the details of the conversation with PM Modi were not officially disclosed, sources indicated that issues related to federal cooperation, development funding, infrastructure projects and welfare schemes were expected to be part of the discussions.

The Delhi visit is being viewed as more than just a courtesy call. It is Vijay’s first major political outreach to the national leadership after securing the confidence vote in the Assembly on May 13 with support from Congress, CPI, CPI(M), VCK and the Indian Union Muslim League.

Apart from meeting PM Modi, Vijay is also expected to hold discussions with several senior leaders across the political spectrum, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan. Political observers believe the meetings underline Vijay’s attempt to position himself as a pragmatic regional leader capable of engaging with both allies and rivals at the national level.

The Chief Minister recently unveiled a 33-member Cabinet aimed at balancing administrative experience, caste representation and regional equations. Vijay retained key portfolios such as Home, Police, General Administration, Women Welfare and Municipal Administration, signalling his intent to maintain direct control over governance and law-and-order matters during the early phase of his tenure.

The Cabinet also reflected a strong emphasis on social representation. Several first-time legislators and Dalit representatives were inducted into ministerial positions, a move seen as an effort to broaden the government’s social outreach.

Meanwhile, political developments within the Opposition AIADMK have added another layer of intrigue to Tamil Nadu politics. Reports of unrest and possible realignment within the party had fuelled speculation that some leaders could move closer to Vijay’s camp. However, senior AIADMK leader S.P. Velumani publicly reiterated support for party chief Edappadi K. Palaniswami, temporarily cooling rumours of a split.

Vijay’s Delhi visit is likely to set the tone for how his government navigates relations with the Centre in the months ahead, particularly on issues involving state rights, economic support and national political positioning.
