Mohan Bhagwat Highlights Balance Between Non-Violence and Strength at Book Launch in Delhi

RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat on Saturday underlined what he described as India’s civilizational commitment to peace and non-violence, while also stressing that society must be prepared to confront forces that threaten harmony and justice. His remarks came during an event in New Delhi marking the release of the book The Hindu Manifesto.

Addressing the gathering, Bhagwat said India’s cultural ethos has always been rooted in respect, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence. However, he argued that these values should not be mistaken for weakness, especially when dealing with individuals or groups determined to cause harm.

Drawing from India’s philosophical traditions, the RSS leader said non-violence remains a fundamental principle of the country’s worldview. According to him, Indian society has historically preferred dialogue, understanding, and coexistence over conflict. He maintained that the nation neither seeks to dominate others nor believes in disrespecting different cultures and communities.

At the same time, Bhagwat noted that there are situations where protecting society and upholding righteousness become necessary responsibilities. Referring to teachings from the Bhagavad Gita, he said the scripture advocates peace but also presents circumstances in which action against wrongdoing becomes unavoidable.

Using the example of Arjuna from the Mahabharata, Bhagwat said the warrior initially hesitated to fight but eventually took up arms when confronted with a larger duty to protect justice. He suggested that the lesson remains relevant in modern times, where societies may face challenges that cannot always be resolved through persuasion alone.

The RSS chief’s comments revolved around the idea that compassion and strength should exist together. He argued that while peace should always be the preferred path, societies must also possess the resolve to respond when faced with persistent aggression or injustice.

The event drew intellectuals, social thinkers, and members of various organizations who gathered for discussions around the themes explored in The Hindu Manifesto. Bhagwat’s address focused on the broader role of cultural values in shaping national character and navigating contemporary challenges.

His remarks are likely to spark discussion, particularly in the context of ongoing debates about India’s identity, traditions, and approach to security and social harmony.
