Ahmedabad’s ambitions to emerge as a global sporting destination received a fresh push as Union Home Minister Amit Shah chaired a high-level review meeting to assess preparations for major international sporting events planned for the city. The meeting focused on infrastructure development linked to the 2030 Commonwealth Games and India’s bid to host the 2036 Olympic Games.
With India increasingly positioning itself as a future hub for global sporting competitions, the review underscored the government’s emphasis on creating world-class facilities that can meet international standards while nurturing sporting talent across the country.
The meeting was attended by Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi and senior officials associated with sports infrastructure and urban development projects. Discussions centered on the progress of stadiums, training centres, transport connectivity and other facilities required to host large-scale international events.
Sharing details after the meeting, Amit Shah said the Modi government is committed to expanding modern sports infrastructure and advanced training facilities across India. He noted that Ahmedabad is being developed with a long-term vision, keeping future global sporting events in mind.
Officials reviewed ongoing projects and examined whether facilities under construction are aligned with international benchmarks. The focus was not only on hosting successful tournaments but also on creating a sporting ecosystem that benefits athletes for decades to come.
Ahmedabad has already been selected to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games and has formally submitted India’s bid for the 2036 Olympics. If successful, the Olympic bid would mark a historic milestone for the country and significantly elevate India’s profile in global sports.
The review meeting reflects the Centre’s intent to closely monitor preparations and ensure that Ahmedabad is equipped with the infrastructure and capabilities required to host some of the world’s biggest sporting events.
