By Ahead of National Handloom Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has appealed to people across the country to celebrate India’s rich handloom heritage with the same enthusiasm they showed during Friendship Day celebrations. In a video shared on Instagram, the Prime Minister encouraged citizens to support local weavers by making handloom products a part of their everyday lives.
Addressing young audiences through a direct social media message, Modi said that buying and wearing handloom is more than a fashion choice—it is a meaningful way to honour the craftsmanship of millions of artisans and contribute to preserving India’s cultural traditions. He urged people to turn the occasion into a nationwide celebration of indigenous textiles.
Drawing a comparison with the widespread enthusiasm seen during Friendship Day, the Prime Minister said National Handloom Day also deserves public participation and appreciation. He encouraged people to purchase handloom products not only on the occasion but throughout the year, saying every purchase directly supports the livelihood of weaving communities across the country.
According to Modi, every handwoven fabric reflects the dedication, skill, and creativity of artisans who have kept India’s traditional weaving techniques alive for generations. He said these products carry stories of craftsmanship and cultural identity that deserve greater recognition.
The Prime Minister also reiterated the importance of supporting the country’s handloom sector under the “Vocal for Local” initiative. He noted that choosing Indian-made handloom products strengthens local economies while helping preserve traditional textile practices that have been passed down through generations.
National Handloom Day is observed every year on August 7 to commemorate the launch of the Swadeshi Movement in 1905, a milestone that encouraged the use of indigenous products during India’s freedom movement. Since 2015, the Government of India has officially marked the day through campaigns and programmes aimed at promoting handloom products and recognising the contribution of the weaving community to the nation’s cultural and economic heritage.
The latest Instagram message is part of the Prime Minister’s continuing effort to engage directly with citizens, particularly younger audiences, through short video messages on social media. In recent weeks, he has increasingly used digital platforms to communicate public campaigns, government initiatives, and social messages in a more conversational format.
Through his latest appeal, Modi encouraged citizens to celebrate India’s weaving heritage by supporting artisans whose work continues to keep one of the country’s oldest and most valued traditions alive.
