The High Commission of India in Ottawa confirmed the dates in a post on X, saying Modi would be in Canada for the two-day visit. The announcement follows a recent conversation between Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, during which the two leaders agreed to use the positive momentum in bilateral relations to pursue concrete outcomes across several areas of mutual interest.
Toronto Likely to Feature in Modi’s Itinerary
Modi’s programme is expected to extend beyond official diplomatic engagements. Speaking to members of the Indian diaspora at a restaurant in Calgary, Carney said the visit would be “largely in Toronto”, suggesting the city will play a significant role in the Prime Minister’s schedule.
Sources indicate that Modi is expected to address an event involving the Indian diaspora in Toronto. He also addressed members of the Indian community during his previous bilateral visit to Canada in 2015.
The proposed engagement comes as India and Canada work to expand communication and cooperation following a period of strained relations. The two governments have indicated an interest in moving forward on practical areas of cooperation, with trade and energy among the key priorities.
Trade Agreement Remains a Key Priority
Progress on a potential India-Canada trade agreement is expected to be an important part of the broader effort to strengthen economic ties. In September, Canadian High Commissioner Christopher Cooter told The Hindu that the agreement was expected to be ready by the end of 2026. He also said the increased engagement planned between the two countries during the year was intended to culminate in Modi’s December visit.
The visit could therefore provide an opportunity for both sides to assess progress and identify the next steps in their economic partnership. However, the precise outcomes of the discussions have not yet been detailed in the announcement.
Meanwhile, India is also pursuing trade negotiations with other major partners. Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal recently said the first tranche of the India-US trade deal was nearing the final legal-drafting stage.
Canada Visit Part of a Busy December Schedule
Modi’s Canada visit is expected to be followed by a series of international engagements. He is scheduled to travel to the United States for the G20 Summit from December 13 to 15, 2026.
The Prime Minister is then expected to visit Brussels on December 16 and 17. The proposed European trip is expected to include bilateral discussions and the signing of the India-European Union Free Trade Agreement, according to the details provided.
With Canada, the United States and the European Union all featuring in the Prime Minister’s December itinerary, the period is set to be significant for India’s diplomatic and economic engagement with key international partners. The outcomes of these visits could help shape the next phase of trade and strategic cooperation.
