Amit Shah begins nationwide border review, focus on Pakistan and Bangladesh frontiers

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has begun an extensive review of India’s border security network, starting with Rajasthan and extending to sensitive frontier regions along Pakistan and Bangladesh over the next three weeks. The visits come at a time when the Centre is pushing for tighter surveillance, stronger anti-infiltration mechanisms and the rollout of advanced border management systems.

Shah arrived in Bikaner on Monday night and is scheduled to visit the Border Security Force’s Sanchu border outpost on Tuesday. Officials said the visit is aimed at assessing ground-level preparedness and strengthening coordination between the BSF, local administration and state authorities in border districts.

At the Sanchu outpost, the Home Minister is expected to attend the “Prahari Sammelan” and virtually inaugurate new barracks for women BSF personnel. Later in the day, he will chair a high-level security review meeting in Bikaner with senior BSF officers, Union Home Ministry officials and representatives from Rajasthan districts bordering Pakistan.

Government sources said Shah’s border visits are part of a larger strategy to modernise security infrastructure and address emerging threats such as infiltration, drone activity, cross-border smuggling and illegal movement networks.

After Rajasthan, Shah is scheduled to travel to Bhuj in Gujarat on May 29, where he will again interact with BSF personnel deployed near the international border. In June, his focus is expected to shift toward the eastern frontier, with planned visits to Tripura and West Bengal — two states that share long and sensitive borders with Bangladesh.

Security agencies have been increasingly concerned about infiltration routes, narcotics smuggling and the growing use of drones along border stretches. The Centre recently indicated that traditional border management methods are being replaced with technology-driven monitoring systems.

Only days before beginning the tour, Shah had announced that the government would soon unveil a “Smart Border Concept” designed to make the Pakistan and Bangladesh borders more secure and technologically equipped. The proposed system is expected to include drones, radars, surveillance cameras and integrated digital monitoring tools to plug security gaps more effectively.

The Home Minister had also spoken about launching a high-powered demography mission to identify infiltration routes and assist the BSF with intelligence-based monitoring.

Officials believe Shah’s border outreach is not only administrative but also strategic, sending a message that border security and illegal infiltration remain among the Centre’s top priorities. The repeated emphasis on coordination between central forces and local administrations indicates that the government wants border management to function as a joint operational effort rather than a standalone security exercise.
