Union Home Minister Amit Shah is set to hold an important meeting with BJP legislators and senior leaders in Kolkata this weekend as the party begins shaping the roadmap for its newly formed government in West Bengal. The meeting is expected to play a crucial role in defining the priorities of the Suvendu Adhikari-led administration for the next five years.
According to party sources, Shah is likely to arrive in Kolkata on Friday night and meet all 207 BJP MLAs, including Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, on Saturday. Senior members of the state leadership are also expected to attend the closed-door strategy session.
The discussions are likely to focus on governance, cabinet expansion, organisational discipline and the BJP’s broader vision for Bengal after ending the Trinamool Congress’s 15-year rule. Party insiders said Shah may also review the progress of ministry formation, as portfolios have so far been allocated only to a handful of ministers.
The BJP leadership appears keen on quickly finalising the remaining cabinet berths and departmental responsibilities to ensure the new administration begins functioning at full strength. Several names are already being discussed within party circles for important portfolios.
Among them, Rashbehari MLA Swapan Dasgupta is being seen as a possible choice for the education department after reportedly holding discussions with officials at Bikash Bhavan, the headquarters of the state education department. Siliguri MLA Shankar Ghosh and Suri MLA Jagannath Chattapadhyay are also being considered for ministerial responsibilities.
Party leaders say the Bengal government wants to project a clean and efficient administrative image from the very beginning. BJP leaders believe the public mandate was driven by anger over alleged corruption, extortion and political violence during the previous regime.
“A strong message will be given to all legislators that the new government must function differently and maintain accountability,” a senior BJP functionary said.
The early signals from the administration reflect that approach. The state government has already moved to withdraw unauthorised toll collection points and parking facilities in several urban areas. Urban Development and Municipal Affairs Minister Agnimitra Paul has also instructed civic bodies to review pending contractor payments and verify the quality of completed work before clearing dues.
Apart from governance issues, the BJP leadership is also expected to discuss organisational management. Following the party’s sweeping victory in Bengal, thousands of people are reportedly seeking to join the BJP. However, the state leadership is moving cautiously to prevent opportunistic entries and maintain discipline within the organisation.
State BJP president Samik Bhattacharya has reportedly advised local units not to induct leaders without proper verification. Sources said Shah may issue broader organisational guidelines during the meeting to strengthen the party structure ahead of future elections.
Before Shah’s arrival, BJP national general secretary Sunil Bansal is expected to hold separate meetings with MLAs and party office-bearers to assess the political and administrative situation in the state.
