Mohan Bhagwat Says Ego and Self-Interest Drive Conflicts, Calls for Unity and Social Responsibility

Mohan Bhagwat on Saturday said that conflicts and wars in the world often arise from human ego and narrow self-interest, stressing that lasting peace can only come through selflessness and a broader vision of unity. Speaking at a religious event in Yadur near Chikkodi in Karnataka’s Belagavi district, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief called on people, especially the youth, to rise above personal interests and work towards the larger goal of social harmony and national development.

Addressing a gathering after inaugurating a Go Tulabhara event at Sri Kadadevara Math, Bhagwat emphasised the idea of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam,” or the world as one family, as a guiding principle for humanity. He said while thinking about personal progress and family welfare is natural and necessary, individuals must also consider the interests of society and the nation. According to him, the younger generation should adopt a balanced approach that combines personal growth with responsibility towards the country and the larger community.

Bhagwat also spoke about the broader philosophy of Hinduism, describing it as a way of life rooted in inclusiveness and mutual respect. He said the strength of the tradition lies in its ability to accommodate diversity and bring people together rather than divide them. A well-organised and socially aware society, he added, is built on respect for different beliefs and a commitment to collective progress.

Highlighting the importance of cultural and social awareness, Bhagwat said religious values should inspire people to work for the welfare of all sections of society. He noted that true religious understanding encourages cooperation, compassion, and service, and helps build a society that is both spiritually aware and socially responsible. According to him, India’s cultural traditions have the potential to guide the world by promoting harmony, tolerance, and shared progress.

Several religious leaders and community representatives present at the event echoed similar views, praising the role of social and voluntary organisations in supporting communities, especially during challenging times such as the COVID-19 pandemic. They urged young people to stay connected to cultural roots while contributing to national development and social service.

The event brought together seers, RSS functionaries, and local leaders, reflecting the organisation’s continued focus on social outreach and ideological messaging. Bhagwat’s remarks, delivered in a spiritual and philosophical tone, centred on the idea that reducing ego and strengthening collective responsibility is essential for achieving peace, unity, and long-term societal progress.
