PM Modi Chairs High-Level Security Meet on Middle East Crisis, Orders Urgent Steps to Protect Supplies and Prices

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday convened a high-level meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) to assess the potential impact of the escalating Middle East conflict on India’s economy and essential supplies, directing ministries to take immediate steps to protect citizens from any fallout. The meeting focused on energy security, fertiliser availability, power supply, and price stability, reflecting growing concern over global supply chain disruptions and rising geopolitical tensions.

With India heavily dependent on the Middle East for crude oil, gas, and fertilisers, the government moved quickly to review contingency plans and ensure that domestic markets remain stable. Officials briefed the Prime Minister on measures already in place to secure petroleum products, including diversification of LPG and LNG supply sources and strict monitoring to prevent hoarding or black marketing. The government has decided to keep LPG prices unchanged for domestic consumers for now, aiming to shield households from sudden price shocks.

The CCS also reviewed the country’s power preparedness, with authorities highlighting adequate coal stock at thermal power plants and steps to boost gas-based power generation if required. Officials assured that current coal reserves are sufficient to meet electricity demand in the coming months, reducing the risk of power shortages even if global supply chains face disruption.

Fertiliser availability, a key concern ahead of the upcoming Kharif and Rabi seasons, was another major focus of the meeting. The government is maintaining steady urea production and working closely with international suppliers to ensure adequate supply of DAP and NPK fertilisers. States have been instructed to keep a close watch on distribution networks and take strict action against hoarding or diversion, ensuring farmers do not face shortages during critical agricultural periods.

The Prime Minister also reviewed price trends of essential commodities, directing officials to maintain real-time coordination with states and Union Territories through dedicated control rooms under the Essential Commodities Act. The aim is to quickly respond to any sudden price spikes and maintain market stability during the global crisis.

A key point of discussion was the need for clear and timely communication with the public. Modi stressed that accurate information must be shared regularly to prevent panic, rumours, or misinformation that could disrupt markets or public confidence. The meeting also discussed global efforts to keep shipping routes, especially through the Strait of Hormuz, operational to ensure uninterrupted movement of oil and cargo.

Officials said coordination between central ministries, state governments, and district administrations will be intensified in the coming days. The Prime Minister directed all departments to remain alert and take proactive steps to minimize the impact of global tensions on citizens, businesses, and critical sectors, underlining that economic stability and supply security remain the government’s top priority.
