PM Modi Pays Tribute to Lal Bahadur Shastri, Recalls His Simplicity and National Service

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday paid tribute to former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri on his birth anniversary, remembering him for his simplicity, determination and commitment to the nation. Modi said Shastri’s approach to public life continues to serve as an inspiration, particularly his emphasis on the welfare and progress of the country.

In a post on X and a video message, Modi recalled Shastri’s relatively brief tenure as prime minister and said his dedication to national service was reflected in the way he sought to motivate both soldiers and farmers. He referred to Shastri’s message to the country as a guiding “mantra” for taking India towards greater progress.

“Homage to Lal Bahadur Shastri Ji, whose simplicity and dedication to the nation remain deeply inspiring,” Modi said in his post.

Modi Recalls Shastri’s Strength Behind His Gentle Persona

In his video message, the prime minister highlighted what he described as a distinctive quality in Shastri’s personality. Modi said that although Shastri appeared gentle and courteous in his public demeanour, he possessed a strong determination and willpower.

Modi said remembering the former prime minister evokes deep respect and pride. He also highlighted Shastri’s contribution to the country during a period when India faced significant national challenges.

Shastri’s appeal to both farmers and members of the armed forces became closely associated with his vision of strengthening the country through both national security and agricultural production.

Lal Bahadur Shastri’s Life and Political Career

Lal Bahadur Shastri was born on October 2, 1904, in Uttar Pradesh. He went on to become one of India’s prominent political leaders and served as the country’s second prime minister after Jawaharlal Nehru.

Shastri assumed office on June 9, 1964, and remained prime minister until his death on January 11, 1966, in Tashkent.

His tenure lasted less than two years, but it included a significant period in India’s post-Independence history. His public image remained closely associated with personal simplicity and a commitment to national service.

The prime minister’s tribute on Shastri’s birth anniversary highlighted these aspects of his legacy, with Modi recalling the former leader’s character and his emphasis on the country’s welfare.

A Legacy Remembered on His Birth Anniversary

October 2 is observed as the birth anniversary of Lal Bahadur Shastri as well as Mahatma Gandhi. On the occasion, tributes are paid across the country to leaders whose contributions have shaped India’s political and public life.

Modi’s message focused particularly on Shastri’s personal qualities, his commitment to the nation and the determination that, according to the prime minister, stood behind his calm and modest public persona.
