PM Modi Reduces Motorcade Size Amid Push for Fuel Conservation During Global Energy Crisis

Narendra Modi has reportedly reduced the size of his official motorcade as part of efforts to promote fuel conservation amid rising global energy prices linked to the ongoing Middle East conflict.

According to government sources, the Prime Minister has directed officials to scale down the number of vehicles accompanying him during domestic visits while ensuring all mandatory security arrangements remain intact under Special Protection Group (SPG) protocols.

The move comes just days after Modi appealed to citizens to adopt a more cautious and responsible lifestyle in response to mounting pressure on India’s fuel imports and foreign exchange reserves. During a public address earlier this week, the Prime Minister urged people to avoid unnecessary fuel consumption, reduce non-essential foreign travel, use public transport and spend carefully amid global economic uncertainty.

Officials said the reduced convoy arrangement was already implemented during Modi’s recent visits to Gujarat and Assam. Sources also indicated that the Prime Minister has encouraged the inclusion of electric vehicles in his convoy wherever practical, though no new purchases are planned specifically for this purpose.

The decision has attracted attention because criticism had recently surfaced on social media over the large convoys used by political leaders while ordinary citizens were being asked to conserve fuel and cut expenses.

India remains heavily dependent on imported crude oil and natural gas, with a significant portion of supplies passing through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz. Continued instability in the region, especially after the conflict involving Iran, has sharply increased global energy prices and raised concerns about inflation and economic pressure in many countries, including India.

Economic experts believe prolonged disruptions in global oil supply could affect fuel prices, transportation costs and overall economic growth. Although petrol and diesel prices in India have not yet been revised significantly, analysts say pressure is building on fuel retailers and policymakers.

The Centre has repeatedly highlighted its push towards long-term energy security through renewable energy expansion, ethanol blending, solar power projects and electric mobility initiatives. Modi has often spoken about reducing dependence on imported fuel and promoting sustainable energy alternatives as part of India’s larger economic strategy.

Government officials maintain that the Prime Minister’s latest decision is intended to send a symbolic message that fuel conservation and responsible consumption should begin at every level, especially during periods of global economic stress.

The Prime Minister’s Office has not yet issued an official statement regarding the reduction in the motorcade size.
