The BJP has elevated Haryana Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Bhatia to the post of national general secretary, bringing a leader known primarily for organisational work, grassroots mobilisation and election management into the party’s central leadership team. His appointment marks a significant step up for the Panipat-based politician, whose career has largely been built away from the spotlight.
Bhatia’s elevation also gives Haryana a stronger presence in the BJP’s national organisation. His appointment comes alongside the inclusion of other leaders associated with the state, including Haryana BJP in-charge and Rajya Sabha MP Satish Kumar Punia and Arun Yadav, who has worked with the party’s social media organisation, in BJP national president Nitin Nabin’s new team.
From student politics to BJP’s national team
Bhatia, who was born in Panipat on July 29, 1967, began his political journey through the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) before taking on organisational responsibilities within the BJP.
Over the years, he worked at the mandal, district and state levels and served as BJP Haryana general secretary between 2015 and 2021. His long association with the RSS-BJP organisational structure helped establish his reputation as a leader focused more on party-building than public visibility.
Following his appointment as national general secretary, Bhatia met Union minister and former Haryana chief minister Manohar Lal in Panipat on Sunday to seek his blessings. Manohar Lal congratulated him and encouraged him to continue his organisational work with the same dedication.
2019 election victory brought national attention
Bhatia gained wider political recognition after winning the 2019 Lok Sabha election from Karnal. Contesting his first parliamentary election, he defeated his Congress opponent by 6,56,142 votes, which the source material describes as the largest winning margin recorded in Haryana’s Lok Sabha electoral history.
The scale of the victory highlighted Bhatia’s organisational reach and his ability to mobilise BJP workers at the grassroots, including booth-level teams.
When Manohar Lal contested from Karnal in the 2024 Lok Sabha election, Bhatia returned his focus largely to organisational responsibilities. In March 2026, the BJP nominated him for the Rajya Sabha from Haryana, and he was subsequently elected, taking oath in April.
Experience across several states
Bhatia’s organisational assignments have not been limited to Haryana. The BJP has previously deployed him in West Bengal, Assam, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and Karnataka, where he worked on election management, organisational expansion and coordination with party workers.
Within the BJP, he is regarded as a leader who prefers working behind the scenes, with a particular focus on strengthening the party structure, mobilising workers and implementing organisational strategies on the ground.
Haryana gets stronger representation at the national level
His elevation comes at a time when several leaders linked to Haryana are gaining positions within the BJP’s central organisational structure. The inclusion of Bhatia, Punia and Yadav gives the state a broader presence in the party’s national decision-making and organisational network.
Bhatia will now have to balance his responsibilities as a Rajya Sabha member with his new role as national general secretary, where he is expected to work on organisational matters across states.
For the Haryana BJP, his promotion represents recognition of a career built around party organisation, election management and grassroots mobilisation—and places one of the state unit’s experienced organisational leaders in a much wider national role.
