Prime Minister Narendra Modi was awarded Norway’s highest civilian honour, the Grand Cross of the Royal Norwegian Order of Merit, during his official visit to the country on Monday. The recognition came just a day after Sweden conferred its top civilian award on the Indian Prime Minister, marking another milestone in his international diplomatic outreach.
Accepting the honour, PM Modi dedicated the award to the people of India and described it as a reflection of the growing partnership between India and Norway. He said the recognition symbolised the shared commitment of both nations towards global progress, cooperation and stronger bilateral ties.
The honour adds to a long list of international recognitions received by Modi from foreign governments over the years. Officials said the award also underlines the strengthening relationship between India and Nordic countries in areas such as clean energy, climate action, technology, maritime cooperation and sustainable development.
The Prime Minister’s Europe tour has focused heavily on expanding strategic partnerships and boosting economic collaboration with key nations. During his meetings with Norwegian leaders, discussions reportedly centred around renewable energy, green shipping, Arctic cooperation and investment opportunities.
Back home, the BJP welcomed the recognition and called it a moment of pride for the country. Party spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi said the repeated international honours received by Modi reflected India’s growing influence on the global stage under his leadership.
Political observers noted that the award also carries diplomatic significance, as European nations continue to deepen engagement with India amid shifting global geopolitical and economic dynamics.
