India-Italy Partnership Gets Major Push as Modi, Meloni Seal Key Agreements

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on Tuesday elevated India-Italy relations to a “Special Strategic Partnership”, marking a major step forward in cooperation across defence, critical minerals, technology and trade. The high-profile meeting in Rome also underlined the growing political comfort between the two leaders, whose public camaraderie once again drew international attention.

The visit was especially significant because it marked the first bilateral trip by an Indian Prime Minister to Italy in more than two decades. Beyond diplomatic symbolism, the talks produced a series of concrete outcomes aimed at expanding cooperation in sectors considered crucial for the future global economy.

Among the most important announcements was the launch of a new defence industrial roadmap that will encourage co-development and co-production between Indian and Italian defence companies. Officials said the framework would focus on areas such as helicopters, naval systems, marine equipment and electronic warfare technologies. Both countries also agreed to deepen maritime security cooperation and begin a dedicated maritime dialogue.

Another major breakthrough came in the area of critical minerals, which are essential for electric vehicles, batteries, semiconductors and advanced manufacturing. India and Italy signed an agreement to build resilient and sustainable supply chains for these resources at a time when countries are increasingly trying to reduce dependence on a limited number of suppliers.

Speaking after the talks, PM Modi described defence and security ties as a reflection of the “deep trust” shared by the two nations. He said India and Italy would combine their technological strengths to create innovation-driven partnerships in areas such as artificial intelligence, quantum computing, space and clean energy.

The two sides also strongly condemned terrorism and called for greater international cooperation against terror financing. In a joint statement, both leaders referred to the 2025 Pahalgam terror attack and reiterated their commitment to work together at forums such as the United Nations and the Financial Action Task Force (FATF).

Apart from defence and security, the leaders reviewed progress on the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), a project seen as a major alternative trade and connectivity route linking India with Europe through the Gulf region. They stressed the need for faster implementation of the initiative in the coming years.

The visit also produced agreements in maritime transport, financial monitoring and anti-money laundering cooperation. India and Italy further agreed to expand collaboration in Africa, particularly in healthcare, renewable energy, digital infrastructure and artificial intelligence projects.

The warm personal rapport between Modi and Meloni remained a talking point throughout the visit. The two leaders shared light-hearted moments during public appearances, including a selfie at Rome’s iconic Colosseum, reflecting the increasingly close political understanding between New Delhi and Rome.
