The Bharatiya Janata Party has nominated its National General Secretary and Jammu & Kashmir-Ladakh in-charge, Tarun Chugh, as a candidate for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections from Madhya Pradesh, underlining the party’s continued emphasis on experienced organisational leaders in key parliamentary roles.
With the Rajya Sabha elections scheduled for June 18, Chugh’s nomination is being viewed as a recognition of his long-standing contribution to the BJP’s organisational growth across several states. Given the party’s current strength in Madhya Pradesh, his election to the Upper House is widely expected.
A native of Amritsar in Punjab, Chugh began his political journey through the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) before rising through the ranks of the BJP. Holding an MBA in Human Resources, he has spent decades working within the party structure and has handled several crucial assignments at the national level.
In recent years, Chugh has been one of the BJP’s key faces in Jammu and Kashmir. Party leaders credit him with playing an important role in strengthening the BJP’s organisational network in the Union Territory. His stewardship during the 2024 Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections, where the BJP secured a significant presence in the Assembly, further enhanced his standing within the party.
The BJP on Thursday announced a broader list of candidates for Rajya Sabha elections across multiple states. Alongside Chugh, former Rajasthan BJP chief Satish Poonia was nominated from Rajasthan, while Debashish Samantaray was fielded from Odisha after recently joining the party.
The party also declared candidates for Gujarat, where it is expected to comfortably win all four seats. Rajubhai Shukla, Mukeshbhai Rathwa, Mansingh Parmar and Jitendra Meghjibhai Kanzariya have been named from the state. Other BJP nominees include Rajneesh Agrawal from Madhya Pradesh, A. Sharda Devi from Manipur and Tai Tagak from Arunachal Pradesh.
Political observers note that Chugh’s elevation comes at an important time, especially with Punjab heading towards Assembly elections in 2027. His parliamentary role could further strengthen the BJP’s efforts to expand its footprint in the border state and other strategically significant regions.
Meanwhile, opposition parties have also announced their candidates. The Congress has renominated party president Mallikarjun Kharge from Karnataka and fielded several senior leaders across states, including Meenakshi Natarajan from Madhya Pradesh and Pawan Khera from Karnataka.
Rajya Sabha elections will be held for seats across several states, including Gujarat, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh and Jharkhand. The last date for filing nominations is June 8, with voting scheduled for June 18.
For the BJP, Tarun Chugh’s nomination signals the party’s confidence in leaders who have built their careers through organisational work and grassroots engagement, reinforcing its strategy of rewarding experienced party functionaries with larger national responsibilities.
