By Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has announced that more than one lakh young people will be recruited into government jobs across the state over the next six months. He made the announcement while handing appointment letters to newly selected candidates in Lucknow, linking the recruitment drive to his government’s claim of making the selection process more transparent.
At an appointment letter distribution ceremony, 818 candidates selected through the Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission (UPPSC) and Uttar Pradesh Subordinate Services Selection Commission (UPSSSC) received their appointment letters. Adityanath also used the occasion to criticise the previous Samajwadi Party government, alleging that recruitment processes before 2017 were affected by irregularities and political interference.
The chief minister referred specifically to the appointment of Anil Kumar Yadav as UPPSC chairman under the previous government. Adityanath alleged that an unsuitable person had been appointed to the position. The Allahabad High Court later quashed Yadav’s appointment in October 2015, holding that the selection process had failed to properly assess his suitability and competence.
Adityanath said the court’s intervention, along with protests by young people at the time, highlighted the concerns surrounding recruitment under the previous administration. He contrasted that period with his government’s claim that recruitment commissions and examination bodies are now conducting selection processes in a transparent and impartial manner.
The chief minister expanded his criticism to the broader functioning of the former SP government, alleging corruption, discrimination, law-and-order problems and irregularities in recruitment. He also claimed that a lack of employment opportunities had compelled many young people from Uttar Pradesh to look outside the state for work.
According to Adityanath, his government has focused on using Uttar Pradesh’s large young population as an economic asset rather than allowing it to become a source of unemployment and migration. He also highlighted the state’s financial performance, claiming that Uttar Pradesh has remained revenue-surplus for six consecutive years and has risen into the country’s top three state economies.
The appointment letter ceremony was presented as part of the government’s continuing recruitment programme. Reiterating his six-month target, Adityanath said more than one lakh additional government appointments would be made during the period, potentially expanding opportunities for young job seekers across different departments and services.
The announcement comes with recruitment and employment remaining a major political issue in Uttar Pradesh, with the state government seeking to highlight its record on public-sector appointments while drawing a contrast with the previous administration.
